    Kuvaus :

In 1298 the masterpiece of early Catalan Gothic, the cathedral of Barcelona was begun, and even in this land of sombre churches, its sombre magnificence has never been surpassed. It is only 273 feet long and yet the immense height of the pier arcade makes it appear gigantic. Each column rises without a break 50 feet above the pavement and an impression of height is created which is a pure illusion.

The westernmost of the four bays in the nave supports a very lofty modern lantern dome. The aisles are flanked with vaulted side-chapels, two to each bay, erected between huge internal buttresses, and above them runs a gallery, or tribune, lit by windows, which forms a sort of clerestory to the aisles. The transepts scarcely project, and they are marked internally only by the fusion of two side-chapels into one and the consequent abolition of a buttress, the weight of the vault over the crossing being taken by a tower over each transept.

The nave is vaulted in practically square compartments, and the aisles in oblong compartments following the old Italian method. Externally the vaulting is exposed, its only protection from the elements being tiles.

In the clerestory there is only room for a miniature rose-window in each bay, an arrangement which happens to be very suitable for the Spanish climate and light. The choir is only two bays in length and terminates in a seven-sided apse with high stilted arches, round which is an ambulatory with radiating chapels. This chevet, which is probably the most beautiful feature of the cathedral, is largely copied from Narbonne and forms a compromise between the Northern French type and the Languedocien with its internal buttresses.

The whole church shows an amazingly uniform treatment, in spite of the fact that several architects were in charge.

The influence of Barcelona Catherdal over neighboring Catala cathedrals was considerable.
