The Sony Center is one of the most impressive new districts of Berlin.

The big glass buildings are situated around a huge oval square, the Sony Plaza, with cafés, restaurants, stores and movie theaters. Its oval tent-like glass roof is constructed of steel ropes and poles, making it seem to float over the plaza. The roof is a spectacular feat of engineering and is a highlight of Berlin’s new architecture.

The twenty-six-store glass skyscraper at the Potsdamer Platz rises on a semicircular ground plan by a height of 103 meters. It is the highest building at the Potsdamer Platz.

Remnants of the former luxury hotel Esplanade from 1911 (the breakfast room and imperial room) are integrated into the new building. The imperial room was hydraulically transposed 75 meters in a spectacular undertaking in 1996. (A total of 1300 tons had to be moved.)
