National romanticism enjoyed its greatest popularity in Scandinavia, and for this reason its Netherlands adherents were sometimes called “The Swedes”.

Also numbered among the Swedes was A. van der Steur, whose best-known work is the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, which he built in 1928–35 while he was the City Architect.

It is a complex work that goes beyond its basic national romantic style to incorporate elements from the Amsterdam School and Art Deco into a successful and livable building. It is almost exactly contemporary with Berlage’s museum in Den Haag, and strives for the same spatial drama, but elaborates it with quite a different syntax. (The 1963–72 extension wing is by Alexander Bodon).
