The Schröderhaus is often described as ‘De Stijl’, but both its designers, Rietvald and Schröder, always minimized the connection. Rietvald brought his practical training to bear on the ideas developed in Paris in 1923 and was able to build a house that remains the best build example of them.
There are later drawings and models that analyze and emphasize the deconstructivist aspects of the house’s design, but many of these are not by Rietveld.
Rietvald’s own first-study model was a simple, solid cube with the colors and details painted and drawn on it. One of the principal ways in which the Schröder House is more eloquent than Van Doesburg’s own is in its greater use of separated, articulated elements. Each facade is divided into “lidded” and “vertically infinite” portions resolving one of the most difficult aspects of ‘De Stijl’ theory.
