In 1890s Amsterdam opened a new street, Raadhuisstraat, to connect the Dam Palace with the Westerkerk. On the outside of the curve of this street, A.L. van Gendt built a long development of shops and offices with an arcade over the sidewalk—a relatively novel format for the Netherlands. Across from Van Gendt’s “galleria”, Berlage and Bonda designed a six-story building whose upper floors contained not offices, but apartments.

The arcade accentuates the broad curve of the street. The facade shows influences of Berlage and Art Nouveau in the wrought ironwork and stonework, yet it is traditional in symmetry and ressaulting of the centre. Crocodiles, predators etc. summon the passer-by to purchase life insurance—the arcade was commissioned by Insurance Company Utrecht.
