"The parvis of the Saint-Roch church was the scene of one of the bloodiest episodes of the Revolution, which occurred on the 13th Vendemiaire year IV (October 5, 1795). There Bonaparte opened fire on the royalists, and sent an attack with a battalion of volunteers. It was necessary afterwards to remove all traces of struggle and sacrifice the sculptures that the mitrailleuse damaged. Sculptures, by Claude Francin, representing the Church Fathers and angels bowing down before a cross, was lost. The interior of the church was also destroyed at that time and the church was in the end abandoned to the Theophilanthropists."
