The Luxembourg Palace was built for Maria de’ Medici, widow of Henry IV and the mother of Louis XIII. She wanted a mansion reminiscent of the Pitti Palace, her former palatial home in Florence. Maria fled the palace in 1630 after the Day of the Dupes uprising and never returned. The French Revolution confiscated it to use as a prison and during the World War II the palace served as headquarters for Luftwaffe. Since 1852, it has served the Senate, and today the adjacent Musée du Luxembourg shows temporary exhibits.
