“His Majesty the Sultan emerges from the palace in his splendid procession to perform the festival prayers…The procession continues till it arrives at the Dolmabahçe Palace which is one of the world’s most famous and beautiful buildings. During the reign of Sultan Abd al-Majid 4 million pounds were spent in building it. The door alone cost eighty thousand pounds; it is made of marble inlaid with gold. There is no building like it in the world.
It remains empty. This was the first debt that the state incurred and required that it start borrowing money. The reception hall is totally unique; Sultan Al-Ghuri’s inlaid throne sits in the middle. On this festival day, His Majesty sits on this throne.”
