“… At the far end of this street (Tirendaz Sokağı, the Street of the Archer), on the left, we come to a handsome Byzantine church with a fluted minaret. This is known in Turkish as Kilise Camii, literally Church Mosque. It is no longer used as a mosque and is kept locked, but one of the local children will invariably fetch the key and let you in, the usual procedure for gaining entry to abandoned monuments in Istanbul.
This was identified by Gyllius as the church of St Theodore, but nothing is known of its history other than the fact that it was converted to a mosque soon after the conquest.”
