“When Amelia Edwards [an English novelist, journalist, traveller and Egyptologist (1831–1892) (1)] visited Esna, the Temple of Khnum was ‘buried to the chin in the accumulated rubbish of a score of centuries’ and built over with houses. To minimize their destruction, only a portion was excavated in the 1860s. Now 10m below ground level, the temple resembles a pharaonic Fort Knox, its boxy mass fronted by six columns rising from a screen, the open space above them covered with wire mesh to discourage nesting birds.”

“…some visitors are disappointed by what they find: the only part to have been excavated is the Hypostyle Hall, whose somewhat inferior reliefs detract from the forest of columns and lofty astronomical ceiling.” (2)
