“There are admirable mosaics over the triumphal arch of the high altar and in the apse dating from the time of Paschal I. The church is said to cover the site of the house where St Prassede sheltered persecuted Christians, twenty-three of whom were discovered and executed in her presence. The church contains one of Bernini’s earliest works, completed when he was about nineteen, a small bust of Bishop G. B. Santoni (d.1593) on one of the columns in the nave.”

“The legend connects this titulus with another church on the slopes on the Esquiline, the titulus S. Pudenziana. The two saints, so the legend goes, were sisters, daughters of the senator Pudens who had hosted St. Peter in his home. Even though this is a late pious fabrication to explain the original names of the founders and give them a meaning to contemporary believers, this legend of the sixth century might preserve the memory of an old fifth-century foundation. This is confirmed by earlier sources.”
