The new cathedral was erected beside the old, partly so that the former belfry could still be used. New cathedral has many points of resemblance with Seville. In plan it is a gigantic rectangle. There are three aisles to both nave and choir, and side-chapels between the buttresses. Again as at Seville, there is no triforium proper, only a balustraded gallery, which runs between the main arcade and clerestory.

“The 16th century was not favorable to the building on a Gothic cathedral. Although both Juan Gil de Hontanon and his son Rodrigo, his successor in 1538, were ardent Gothicists, more than a suspicion of Renaissance motifs entered into their scheme of decoration. We find the clerestory windows filled with Renaissance tracery, triforium galleries with Italianate pilasters, and below these, in the spandrels of the arches, the circular medallions for which Berruguete, a Spanish disciple of Michelangelo, set the fashion.”
